Beyer Garratt Week at NMSI

The Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester, England, recently celebrated the centenary of the very first Beyer Garratt locomotive, built in Manchester in 1909. It staged a week long display of the Museum's own locomotives, including its huge Beyer Garratt of South African Railways, returned to Manchester for preservation, plus visiting Beyer Peacock-built locomotives from other museums and preserved railways. Among these was the first ever Beyer Garratt of 1909, originally built for the 2ft gauge Tasmanian Railways. After withdrawal it was returned to the BP Gorton works for display, then donated to the 2ft gauge Ffestiniog Railway, which later overhauled it and restored it to full working order.

My wife Margaret and I visited the musem on Saturday, 15th August, and took a number of photographs, some of which are displayed here. The weather was a mix of heavy rain and bright, sunny intervals and some of our photographs display evidence of these alternating conditions - sometimes taken only minutes apart.

Here is a selection of those we thought were worth publishing, come rain or shine! To view the pictures individually just click on the thumbnails. To view them in a larger size with better definition, scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click on 'Full Size'. To view them as a continuous slide show, open the first slide bearing the title and again at the bottom of the page click on 'Slide show'. The pictures should then scroll through automatically from first to last. Enjoy!

Bala Lake Diesel Bob Davies

Here are just a handful of pictures I took of a 4-wheel diesel locomotive at work on the Bala Lake Railway in mid-Wales in the Summer of 1995.

The loco was named after the late Bob Davies, one of the stalwart members of the 2ft Gauge Bala Lake Railway.

Open the first picture by left-clicking on it then scroll to the bottom of the screen. You will see several options listed, one of which says 'Full Size' and the other 'Slide Show'. Click on either of these to exercise their options. If preferred, just click on the sideways directional arrows to scroll through the show manually.

IMPORTANT: If you open any picture to the Full Size setting and it looks rather 'bitty', try moving your mouse off & on the bottom right corner until a '+' sign in a circle appears. Click upon this and the picture should enlarge and the title text appear smoother.

Bala Lake Railway 2004

This is a photographic record of a very brief visit to the 2ft gauge Bala Lake Railway in Mid-Wales. The Bala Lake Railway operates over a short section of the trackbed of the former standard gauge Ruabon to Barmouth line which was closed and dismantled by British Rail in the mid-1960s. Two distinctly separate sections of this line have since been re-laid and reopened, the other being the standard gauge Llangollen Railway, now running from Llangollen to Carrog.

Unfortunately we had to leave Llanuwchllyn before the train hauled by Holy War was due to depart because of exceedingly heavy traffic on both available roads back to Bala. We managed to get ahead of it by Llangower but another car traffic crawl put us far enough behind again to reach Bala station just as the train was departing. My picture of that was the last one I took at the BLR that day but it appeared nice enough to serve as the opening title slide so that's where I've put it!

IMPORTANT: If you open any picture and it looks rather 'bitty', try moving your mouse off & on the bottom right corner until a '+' sign in a circle appears. Click upon this and the picture should enlarge and the title text appear smoother.

Monday 3 May 2004: This is a photographic record of a very brief visit to the 2ft gauge Bala Lake Railway in Mid-Wales.

Welshpool & Llanfair Lt Rly Gala visit 0n 30 August 2008

This is a short album of photographs taken by myself during a late Saturday afternoon visit to the 2008 Annual Gala of the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, situated in mid-Wales.

Of necessity, my travelling colleagues and I had to fit in a visit to this gala and the nearby
GardenRail model railway show in a single day, out from home and return. As a result my photo coverage is not as extensive as I had hoped but there are several views of most of the operating equipment taken at 3 different locations.

All the pictures are captioned so please sit back and enjoy them. The size you view them at will depend upon your own monitor's screen size and pixel settings. I have a 19 inch screen set to 1350 X 900 pixels (3:2, as with 35mm film) and have sized the pictures to suit it. If your monitor has a 'fit to screen' setting you should see the Fotopic page, with its main picture at the top, small thumbnails of 'previous' and 'next' pictures and a choice of preferences along the bottom. Two of these --- 'Full Size' and 'Slide Show' are self-explanatory and are recommended.

A Princess Passes By...

The preserved 1933-built LMS Pacific No 6201
'Princess Elizabeth' hauled one of a series of
steam-hauled specials from Liverpool to
Holyhead and back on Sunday, 17th August
2008.

I caught it the lazy way, by just walking up the
road to my local station, Earlestown, to watch
it drift around the sharp, 20 mph West curve
of the trianglular junction.

Here are 10 pictures of the train as it passed
by, the first and last having added titles, as if
in a mini-slide show. There is in fact an option
to view the album as a slide show. It can be
found right at the bottom of each slide's page.

Enjoy!

When Billy Met Millie

This is a very small album of just 11 photographs that illustrate the return to service of my 16mm scale live steam locomotive ‘Millie’ after a partial repaint and the application of some new transfers. Millie had to run without her cab front on this occasion because one of its brass spectacle rings kept falling out after applying the transfer. All the pictures were taken were taken on my friend Roger Fletcher's Henbury Railway in his Cheshire garden.

Because Millie hadn't run for several months before her repaint she was escorted throughout her first half hour of trials by one of Roger's own steam locomotives, a Roundhouse Billy. By using Billy's radio control Roger forced Millie to do most of the work, which she did very well. Only one of Millie's later solo runs with her own goods train were captured before I changed over to digital video format so the rest cannot be included here.

It was a very dull day and we were just thinking about packing up when the rain came down and hastened our decision!

My thanks go to Roger for hosting this Sunday morning steam up.

West Lancs Lt Ry Teddy Bear's Day

This short photo album takes a somewhat light hearted look at the special day put on each year for the younger visitors to the West Lancashire Light Railway in North West England.

The WLLR is not actually a preserved railway in the normal sense of that word because it was specially constructed to house, restore and operate many of the 2ft gauge locomotives and items of rolling stock that were being retired from industry in the 1960s.

It is both managed and operated entirely by volunteer enthusiasts, some of whom have been attending the railway since they first created it over 40 years ago.

It usually operates on Sundays only between Easter and October but there are several special events each year which see trains running over 2 or 3 day weekends.

Click on the title slide to open the show, then advance to the next by clicking on its thumbnail image. If you scroll down to the foot of the page you can either click on 'Full Size' to see a larger picture or click on 'Slideshow' then sit back and let the program run itself.

West Lancs Rly - Brief Visit 12Jan2008

This is a very small photo album that will enable me to quote the URL of any image in my messages to those e-groups and newsgroups that don't allow the attachment of images. This particular file contains photos with both railway and family interest, the last category jokingly implying that I am still capable of doing some physical work!

The reason for our closed season visit to the West Lancashire Light Railway was to collect, with permission, a couple of containers of spent locomotive ash and char from the loco shed dump. This is destined for reuse in a garden railway scenario as between-tracks infill on my 16mm scale Sankey River Line.

The WLLR was closed to the public but was holding one of its private 'drive-an-engine' sessions for two paying guests, Alan and Dale. They were under the instruction and supervision of WLLR driver and 16mm Association member/modeller Derek Preece and his fireman/guard Ian Clark.

The 0-4-0T Steam locomotive in use on the day was No 35 Utrillas. It was built in 1907 for the Minas de Utrillas, Zaragoza, Spain by the German loco builders Orenstein & Koppel, works number 2378 .

All the pictures were taken on Saturday, 12 Jan 2008, the majority of them by my wife Margaret using her Fuji Finepix F20 digital camera.

Roundhouse 0-4-0T Steam Loco Millie.

This is a probably temporary album showing the original, out of the box model basic locomotive with a minimum of working parts.

An externallly fired gas flame burner raises steam up to 40lb per square inch and the valve gear is worked from a slip eccentric ring behind each of the rear driving wheels.

More fittings and paintwork alterations may soon be applied in the new year of 2008.
