| The Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester, England, recently celebrated the centenary of the very first Beyer Garratt locomotive, built in Manchester in 1909. It staged a week long display of the Museum's own locomotives, including its huge Beyer Garratt of South African Railways, returned to Manchester for preservation, plus visiting Beyer Peacock-built locomotives from other museums and preserved railways. Among these was the first ever Beyer Garratt of 1909, originally built for the 2ft gauge Tasmanian Railways. After withdrawal it was returned to the BP Gorton works for display, then donated to the 2ft gauge Ffestiniog Railway, which later overhauled it and restored it to full working order.
My wife Margaret and I visited the musem on Saturday, 15th August, and took a number of photographs, some of which are displayed here. The weather was a mix of heavy rain and bright, sunny intervals and some of our photographs display evidence of these alternating conditions - sometimes taken only minutes apart.
