Earlestown's New Footbridge

Here are a few images which I have taken during the erection of a new footbridge over Platforms 4 & 5 of the triangular railway station at Earlestown, Newton-le-Willows. It will give able-bodied people access to the centre platforms 2, 3 and 4, but like its 1898 predecessor, will still deny access to these platforms by disabled passengers. It is also used by hundreds of local residents who use the footpath every day to cross from a main residential part of Newton-le-Willows to the town centre's business and retail sections.

It seems that it is NOT YET COMPULSORY for a new structure on a public right-of-way such as this one to provide disabled access, although many think it is, or should be.
